These are the instruments used to perform female genital mutilation (FGM) in Somalia.

More than 200 million women and girls alive have undergone FGM, which can cause:

  • Female genital mutilation (FGM) involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
  • The practice has no health benefits for girls and women.

Impacts of Gender Based Violence

  1. South African health care facilities – an estimated 1.75 million people annually seek health care for injuries resulting from violence
  2. HIV – an estimated 16% of all HIV infections in women could be prevented if women did not experience domestic violence from their partners. Men who have been raped have a long-term increased risk of acquiring HIV and are at risk of alcohol abuse, depression and suicide.

  1. Reproductive health – women who have been raped are at risk of unwanted pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
  2. Mental health – over a third of women who have been raped develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which if untreated persists in the long term and depression, suicidality and substance abuse are common. Men who have been raped are at risk of alcohol abuse, depression and suicide.
  3. Violence also has significant economic consequences. The high rate of GBV places a heavy burden on the health and criminal justice systems, as well as rendering many survivors unable to work or otherwise move freely in society.

It is violence as a result of unequal power relationships between genders in a society.

Let me give you an example, you may think it’s extremely silly however it is this type of behaviour/ thinking that gives rise to Gender Based Violence daily.

Example 1– it’s a Sunday afternoon and I have prepared a scrumptious meal for dinner. After dinner I asked my husband to assist with the dishes, his response was astounding – “why should I? you are a woman, it’s your job and if you ever ask me that again I will give you a thrashing!”

Example 2– in the workplace- “I don’t think you should go to the construction site today, wouldn’t want yah to break a nail while taking down measurements”

 “I don’t think that are competent for the job, BUT if you have sex with me, I promise to put in a good word for you “

If you heard any of these phrases, sadly you are a victim of gender-based violence.

One in three women will experience some form of abuse in her lifetime.

Since October, millions of women in more than 80 countries have come forward to testify about the harassment, assault and terror they have experienced – and even this is only a glimpse into the horrifying magnitude of the problem.

N.B Negative attitudes about women and girls pave the way for abuse.

Bruised faces, broken bones, blue eyes. For some, these may seem familiar. Whether they are occurring to you or someone you know, it is important to know that we can all help stop family violence.

If you or a friend or loved one is trying to leave an abusive relationship, it is vital to remember that the person causing the hurt is the person who is at fault and needs to change. It is also important to remember that such change is not likely to happen if that person is not delivered an undeniable wake-up call. Even, then, that person may be unable or unwilling to change. Thus, the only way to stop family violence is to take control and decide that enough is enough.

Family violence can have devastating consequences on individuals, families and the communities where they live.

What does it take to prevent Family violence within the community?

  1. Rasing Awareness: Awareness is the first step towards preventing and reducing family violence. It is aimed at the community as a whole, and also at particular groups within the community. To prevent family violence, we must change the attitudes and social conditions that allow it to happen.

How would we go about doing this?

  • Promoting gender equality
  • Encourage respectful relationships
  • Design strategies to change harmful attitudes against each other
  • Use a variety of compliemntary approaches

If people do not know that family violence exists in their community, if they don’t understand its impact or know where to turn for help, they will be unlikely to get involved or to communicate the unacceptability of violence.

Raising awareness allows people to think differently about the problem, and to own the issue as one they can do something about.

  1. Education and Early Intervention: Identify and support people experiencing family violence, with the aim of stopping early signs of violence from escalating, preventing a recurrence of violence, or reducing harm in the longer term.

How would we go about achieving the above?

  • By conducting an intervention programme and educating in:
    a) Schools, pre-schools setting including childcare
  1. b) Local community groups

c)Family services, health care settings, community health         centres and hospitals

  1. 3. Prevention and crisis response: Support women and children to stay safe from someone using family violence against them. Crisis response is important because it prevents harm and saves lives. As well as that, with the right support, women and children can recover and thrive after family violence.
