Shoba Chiboo

Shoba has a BA degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2004 she graduated cum laude with a post graduate LLB degree. She has furthered her qualifications by obtaining an Energy Law diploma through the University of the Witwatersrand. She is an accredited mediator through the University of Stellenbosch and an international commercial mediator through the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) (UK) and she has successfully completed the Construction Adjudication programme through the University of Pretoria.

After successfully completing her articles at Bowman Gilfillan Inc., she was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2007.

She was appointed as an Associate at Bowman Gilfillan and remained there until 2010.

Thereafter she was appointed as a legal advisor at Aveng-Grinaker-LTA where she reported to the Head of Group Legal on various matters.

In 2010 she joined Chiba Attorneys as a Partner and in 2012 she was appointed as a director of Binnington Chiba Consultants, a division of Hill International.

During her years of practice as an attorney she has assisted state owned entities on major capital expansion projects including the procurement and placement of contracts for the Medupi and Kusile Power Stations.

Amongst other things she has been involved in the drafting and negotiation of commercial / construction contracts for mining houses such as Kumba Iron Ore and Anglo American, including a roll-out programme of Standard form construction contracts throughout the organisation.

As a senior commercial and legal advisor she provided advice on mitigation of commercial risk and assisting with the implementation of risk management frameworks. She also attended to a wide array of legal matters and contract drafting, including EPC contracts, Construction and Engineering contracts, Memorandums of Understandings, joint venture and consortium agreements, and enterprise development agreements.

She is currently involved in the drafting and defending of construction related claims for major parastatals and providing strategic advice on risk management and settlement of disputes.
